PATIENT SUPPORT

Our aim is to provide personal support for patients and their families and to raise money to assist patient and family welfare in Tasmania.

The Foundation provides accommodation at David Collins House for out-of-town patients and their carers staying in Hobart for treatment. The David Collins Leukaemia Foundation of Tasmania welcomes new members and friends to continue its work with patient support. All funds raised by the Foundation to support patients remain in Tasmania.

ACCOMMODATION FOR PATIENTS

AND THEIR CARERS - DAVID COLLINS HOUSE

In 1985, the Foundation saw the need for accommodation close to hospital for out-of-town patients and their families. A modern home unit was purchased off Risdon Road, Lutana and was furnished to suit families, with generous assistance from Lions clubs, Rotary clubs, businesses and the public. We continue to maintain David Collins House for use by patients and their carers whilst they are in Hobart for treatment. The unit has been a place of quiet refuge for over 240 families in the past 30 years.

GRANTS FOR LEUKAEMIA RESEARCH

Tasmania has been involved in leukaemia research for many years. In 1967 the inaugural Professor of Medicine, the late Professor A. G. Baikie, established a laboratory for research into leukaemia in Tasmania. Under the direction of Professor R. M. Lowenthal, significant international recognition has been given to the laboratory for its achievements.

Currently research is being conducted in Tasmania to improve the treatment and care of patients as well as studies into the biology of leukaemia.

The Foundation has been involved in research since 1980 by raising money to purchase equipment, finance staff of the research teams and train Tasmanian university research students.
